| This charming oil on canvas landscape is by Charles T. Phelan, landscape painter and pupil of Frederick Rondel (1826-1892) who was best remembered as the teacher of Winslow Homer. Phelan was born in new York City in 1840. His almost impressionistic style mixed with the luministic approach captured the moment's spontaneity. In this painting of sheep grazing, it is the moment when the viewer has come upon the sheep and all of a sudden, one by one, they notice him. Phelan seems to be at the cutting edge of what would be called the Modern Movement. He is listed in The New York Historical Society's Dictionary of Artists in America and the Encyclopedia of Painters and Paintings, Vol. III. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in NYC from 1880 through 1882. Dimensions: 14 x 19-7/8 inches, sight size; 18 x 24 inches in gold leaf frame. The painting is signed lower left. | ||||||||||||
