A striking Brooch by Winifred Mason Chenet, who is known to have signed her work chenet d'haiti. According to published reports Winifred Mason Chenet was an African American woman hand crafting jewelry in Greenwich Village. She worked with and trained Art Smith, a well respected African American modernist jeweler. She believed that each piece should be unique and distinctive. This brooch is made of two overlapping pieces of copper with four edges curled up. Chenet put dark oxidation under the curls for an interesting contrast. Measures 2" across and 1 7/8" high. Roll over closure holds securely. Brooch is marked with the stylized chenet mark. This is a transitional signature between pieces marked Mason and chenet d'Haiti. In very nice condition with very minor surfaces. Very distinctive work.
