Original oil painting on panel by Hans Foy (American, 1892-1971), circa 1930, offered in its original painted frame. This Fauvist-Expressionist little gem measures 10" by 8" (14" by 12" framed). In good original condition. It is signed "Hans Foy" l.r. The frame bears an S. Friedman New York label. Hans Foy was a New York painter, printmaker, and illustrator. He was a member of the American Artists Congress, which was founded in 1935 in New York to help counter the spread of Fascism; he was also one of the signers of the Secession statement (together with Mark Rothko, Milton Avery, George Biddle, etc.) which led to the formation in 1940 of the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors. Hans Foy exhibited at the AIC between 1926 and 1936, and at the Whitney Museum of American Art roughly during the same period. He also exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum in 1935, and at the Guild Art Gallery (NY) in 1937.
