Original oil on canvas board by Walter William Ledyard (American, born 1915). This painting of a (presumably) South Carolina landscape with farmhouses measures 18" by 24" (painting alone) and 28" by 34" in its period frame. Signed l.r. W.W. Ledyard. Also signed twice on the back, dated 1969, and bearing the address of the artist in Columbia, SC. Also inscribed in pencil "Petroff Gil" (Gil Petroff was an important South Carolina artist with whom Ledyard may have studied (cf. Who Was who in American Art). Walter Ledyard is a listed artist, known as a sculptor and painter, born in Illinois. He studied at the University of Illinois with Marquis Reitzel. His works are in the South Carolina State Art Collection, and at the Columbia Museum of Art (he was on the board of trustees, and eventually president, of that institution between 1963 and 1970.) He is listed in the usual reference works including Who Was Who in American Art, and Askart.com.
