Original oil painting on masonite panel by Sheldon F. Hutchins (American, Washington State, 1886-?) in excellent original condition. This oil painting on the textured side of a 12" by 16" masonite panel is titled "The Birches" on a paper label which also bears the signature of the artist. The painting is also signed "S.F.Hutchins" l.r. 16" by 20" in its (presumably original) painted frame--it could benefit from a larger period frame. A view of the Columbia or the Snake river in Eastern Washington (Sheldon Hutchins was born in Ohio, lived in Seattle, and settled in Kirkland, WA). The artist came from an artistically prominent family. He is the brother of Charles Bowman Hutchins. He is known to have studied with Eustace Paul Ziegler, Fokko Tadama, and Vanessa Helder. His paintings were exhibited in the thirties (Annual Exhibit of Northwest Artists, 1932). Sheldon F. Hutchins is a listed artist (Askart, Artists of the Pacific Northwest, Washington State Art and Artists, Who Was Who in American Art) with auction records.
