Original oil painting on canvas board by John Scott Williams (English-born US painter, 1877-1975). This painting is titled "Medicine Bow Peak, Wyoming" on an old exhibition label. It is signed "J. Scott Williams, NA" l.r. It also bears a long inscription verso which states: " Medicine Bow Peak (Scene of recent airplane accident)...painted in 1949 while in residence as Associate Professor at the University of Wyoming--Laramie Wyoming..." (The actual inscription is quite a bit longer). In excellent original untouched condition. 16" by 20" painting alone. John Scott Williams was born in Liverpool but lived in New York and New Jersey. He studied at the AIC with Fred Richardson. He was a member of the ANA, NA, AWCS,etc. He exhibited widely, at PAFA (1911-1913), at the AIC (1924), at the AWCS (1924), at the Salmagundi Club (1928)etc. He was known as an artist, as an illustrator (he collaborated with 20 different magazines including Collier's, and as a WPA artist who contributed murals to the USPO in Newcastle, DE; and four murals and five stained glass windows for the Indiana State Library and Historical Building. As an illustrator he collaborated with his wife Clara Elsene Peck (1883-1968) to a number of works published in The Circle, Collier's, American Magazine, Scribner's, etc. This painting is one of four works by this important American artist currently offered on our web gallery.
