Original oil painting on panel by well-known Dutch painter Willem Van Den Berg (1886-1970), circa 1930-1940. A wonderfully compact composition with fishermen of Urk (Holland) hauling their nets and contemplating their catch with boats in the background. This painting measures 26cm by 19 cm (painting alone) and 44cm by 38cm in its frame. Inscribed verso and on the frame "WVB #128"; also "FG #919" verso, and "Guildhall #919" on the frame. Plus other inscriptions. Provenance: Guildhall Galleries, Chicago (which represented the artist in the USA, and held in the eighties a retrospective exhibit of his work); private collection in Asheville, NC.
Willem Van Den Berg was director of the Royal Academy in Holland until 1953. He was also acknowledged as a court painter. His works are in the collections of the Royal Palace in Holland, the National Museum, Boymans Museum in Rotterdam, the Museums of Amsterdam, Trieste, etc.
