Large original watercolor painting by Nathaniel Dirk (American, 1895-1961), circa 1940s, of a Mexican subject (one of a number of such works by Dirk). This painting is signed l.r. N. Dirk. It was given as a gift to the painter Joseph Newman, and to his wife, and bears a dedication to them verso ("To Joe and Estelle Newman, May they enjoy this picture as well as they enjoy their life. Nathaniel Dirk.") It is also numbered "705" and titled "Fiesta Cadences" in the hand of the artist, and bears a stamp "From the estate of Joseph Newman". This watercolor measures 15" by 22" (27" by 34" in its period frame). In excellent condition. Nathaniel Dirk studied at the ASL with Max Weber, Kenneth Hayes Miller, etc. and in Paris with Fernand Leger. He taught and lectured at the ASL. He had many solo exhibitions (31 in New York City alone). His work is held in a number of museums including the Brooklyn Museum,the Whitney, NAD, AIC, etc.
