THEODORE POLOS, TWO-SIDED WATERCOLOR, 1935-40
Two-sided original watercolor and gouache on paper by Theodore Polos (Greek-born American artist, 1902-1976). From the estate of Grace McCann Morley (founder of San Francisco MOMA). These paintings are painted on a sheet measuring roughly 17" by 24". Only one is signed with "capital Theta. Polos" lower right. Both paintings are in excellent condition, and they are presented in a period frame, with a window showing the unsigned work verso. Polos was born in Mytelene (Lesbos) Greece. He arrived in California in 1922, and studied art at the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, and at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. He was enrolled in the WPA program and produced paintings and lithographs, as well as sculpture. This painting came back to the United States from India, from the estate of Grace Morley who spent the last decades of her life in India after leaving the direction of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art she had founded. Morley and Polos knew each other, as evidenced by the oral interview granted by the artist in 1965. The paintings bear an accession or collection number starting with "41", which indicates that they were painted before, or in, 1941.
