Original oil painting on canvas of a seated nude by Edgar Britton (American, 1901-1982), dated 1937 and signed "Edgar Britton" l.r. 20" by 16" painting alone, 25" by 21" in its original frame. In excellent original condition.
Edgar Britton was an important American muralist, painter and sculptor who studied with Grant Wood in the 20's. In the 30's he created 7 murals for the WPA, including one for the Department of the Interior in Washington DC. He served as director of the Mural Division of the Illinois Art Project in the forties.
Widely exhibited and collected, his work is held at the AIC, the Denver Art Museum, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Pasadena Art Institute, etc. A number of his murals have been preserved in Illinois, Iowa, and DC.
