Original monotype in brown ink by Eugene Higgins (American, 1974-1958), circa 1905-1910, in excellent condition, framed. Image roughly 5" by 6". Higgins' usual dark depiction of the urban poor is in this work somewhat mitigated by the conviviality and togetherness of the scene: the opposite movements of the mother's and father's arms enclose in a protective aura the central character, probably the daughter of the family. Higgins is a major American artist whose monotypes were exhibited at Alfred Stieglitz's 291 Gallery in 1909. From the estate of Anita Higgins Cole, widow of Eugene Higgins who left the works to her second husband the painter Alphaeus P. Cole. A letter by the latter is attached to the back of the frame. We also have a number of etchings by Eugene Higgins available. Eugene Higgins monotypes are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Cf: "The Painterly Print--Monotypes from the Seventeenth to the Twentieth Century, pp. 186-187.
