Original pastel painting on heavy paper by Northam Robinson Gould (American, 1893-1963). Signed "N.R. Gould" l.l. and dated 1946. 30" by 34" in its frame (original but restored), 23" by 27" painting alone. Northam Gould (aka Tod Gould) was born in Brooklyn. He studied at the Pratt Institute, the Cleveland Art School, and at the ASL under Frank Dumond and Robert Henri. He taught art at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins West Virginia, and later moved to Connecticut where he became a successful muralist and portrait painter. Most of his mature work appears to have been in pastel, and he had a one man show in 1946 (when this work was created) at the Frank Rehn Galleries in New York, and later showed at the AIC, in Connecticut, at the Avery Memorial Museum, and Old Lyme and Essex Galleries.
