Large extremely rare oversize woodcut by Wendell H. Black (American, 1919-1972). This is a rare proof printed and signed by the artist himself. It is illustrated in "The Lost Prints of Wendell H. Black" by Henry Sayre, Figure 9. Laid down, presumably by the artist, to safeguard its integrity. This work measures 46" by 22". It is titled in pencil by the artist's hand lower left, and is signed and dated lower right. Black only printed a few examples, and did not complete an edition in his lifetime; the first edition of 25 was created by Berkley Chappell posthumously in 1974 and signed by the artist's wife Elaine. (We also currently have one proof from the 1974 edition available.) Provenance on request.
