Original oil on panel by well-listed Russian-Jewish-American artist Abraham Mark Datz (1889-1969), framed, signed verso "A. Mark Datz", and "Datz" in Hebrew letters, titled verso "The Vertical Way", also dated "1956" and with reference #596. This painting in excellent original condition measures roughly 10" by 14" (14" by 18" in its frame). Datz was born in Russia and settled in New York in 1903. He studied at Cooper Union, NAD, ASL, and the Beaux Arts Institute of Design. Datz has a long exhibition record, and his paintings are in the collections of many museums. His best paintings blend surrealism and Jewish mysticism to create haunting images full of ambiguity, limbo, and longing for the divine.
