| Oil on canvas by Max Band (Lithuanian-American/1900-1974), signed L.L. and dating from around 1940. It measures 18 x 10 and is in excellent original condition, and still in its original frame. Max Band was associated with the Paris School in the pre-war years, before moving to the US. He is known for his still-life paintings, his haunting figures and his religious subjects. His paintings can be found in numerous museums. Listed everywhere. I personally recall seeing a photograph of the artist in his studio at the Jewish Museum in the Marais in Paris, photograph which of course echoed this self-portrait. | |
