Extremely rare Haviland double vase, circa 1870, with Barbizon style paintings on both sides, signed with artist's cipher under glaze and with paper label. The artist's monogram is for Emile-Justin Merlot (1839-1900), one of the artists sponsored by C.E. Haviland in his artist's studio to experiment with painting on ceramic. Merlot is known for landscapes and is listed in Benezit, and in other reference works. The vase is numbered and signed on the bottom. Remnants of the original paper label: "...Haviland and Co/Limoges/Gold Medal and Cross of the Legion of Honour/Paris 1878/Barclay St. NY..." Fine hairline on one side, minor glaze chips.
