Donald Litchfield, "Dry Dock", circa 1940
Original oil painting on canvas by Donald Litchfield (American, 1891-1966) in excellent condition. This painting measures 16" by 20" (painting alone) and is housed in an attractive Arts and Crafts style contemporary frame. It is signed l.l. "Litchfield". Donald Litchfield was born in England, where he received his early art education, but came to the US to study at the Arts Students League, and with Bridgman and Duffner. He met (and was influenced by) Alfred Stieglitz at the original 291 Gallery (the Stieglitz archives still hold a number of sketches and letters by Litchfield). Litchfield finally moved West where he became an illustrator for the Seattle PI and for the San Francisco Chronicle. He exhibited at PAFA in 1937, with the New York Watercolor Society, the Salmagundi Club in New York, and at the De Young Museum in San Francisco in 1940. He is mainly known for his watercolors but we have had a number of oils by him including this offering. We still have also a number of sketches by this artist. Listed in Who Was Who In American Art, Artprice, Washington State Art and Artists, Artists of the Pacific Northwest, and in the next edition of Hughes' Artists in California.
