Original gouache by Joseph Amarotico (American, 1931-1985). This painting is signed and dated "64" l.r. It is also titled "Castle #1" on the backing paper. 18" by 13" painting alone, 26" by 21" in its original frame. From a collection of works originally purchased at the Socrates Perakis Gallery in Philadelphia in 1964--other works in this collection include paintings and drawings by Elizabeth Osborne, Johnny Aiello, and Socrates Perakis himself. Joseph Amarotico studied with Raphael Soyer at the American Art School in New York, and with Theodor Siegl at PAFA. He is known as a painter of Surrealist and architectural fantasies including "dream castles" like this one, as well as a celebrated art conservator at PAFA, from 1966 until his death. Provenance: Socrates Perakis Gallery, 1964; Private collection in Philadelphia.
