Original pencil drawing by (Samuel) Wood Gaylor (American, 1883-1957). This drawing is initialed in pencil l.l. It still bears a label from the Kraushaar Galleries in New York which originally sold the work. Interestingly, the gallery seems to have recycled an old folder which had previously held a work by John Sloan and simply erased the previous information. Untitled and not dated, but circa 1920. A "native" in a borrowed uniform stands in front of another busy cooking human body parts... A great example of Gaylor's quirky wit, and one of two works by this artist currently offered on this site. Samuel Wood Gaylor studied with Walt Kuhn at the National Academy of Design, and participated with him in the fabled Armory Show of 1913. From a New York collection.
