| Al Urban is considered one of the groundbreaking figural photographers of the early 20th century, with a career starting in the 1930s when he offered nude images of New Jersey bodybuilder David Asnis in a physical culture magazine. He had an innate sense of composition and understanding of the male form, capturing images with a respect and classicism that elevated them to fine art status. This photograph is a spectacular nude figure study of 1950s bodybuilder Arthur Harris. Aside from the rarity of a black athlete being given such prestige, (unusual at the time), this image also showcases the meticulous quality of Urban's work, from the pose, to the incredible lighting, to the print quality itself...all extremely high quality. Harris's ripped physique has a steely metallic quality that is surreal, majestic....a great photograph. Measures 7 5/8"x 9 1/2" and is printed on a matte fiber base, double weight paper. In very good condition with a fingerprint (production, either on neg or when developed) minor edge wear, and thin (short) emulsion splits in the lower right corner. Bears a four digit stamp on the reverse. | ||
