This exquisite round box,which probably graced a scholar's desk is a fine example of the burl wood boxes produced from the Ming and well into the late Qing dynasties. The rich brown patina shows a delightful surface grain pattern which almost looks like swirling smoke or root formations.The cover has a slightly inverted domed top with a hand carved central stem. This beautiful 19thC blue&white brushwasher is square in shape with a single cobalt blue lotus flower centered in each of the four sides,all between two double blue lines.The four corners are finely painted with a single cobalt blue butterfly.The bottom shows the six character mark of Guangxu and of the period.Condition:Perfect.
