This wonderful early Ming Dynasty jar,of globular
form w/cover,is decorated with two Buddhist lions among the floral scrollwork. The shoulder is surrounded by a continuous band of 'ruyi'heads between two blue circles. The cover is decorated w/a blue stylized
design between two double blue circles. The small round finial is painted in blue.
Some of the brushwork done during the Wanli period looked washed-out and not as fresh and vibrant as the later Qing porcelains. This occured because the quality varied greatly from kiln to kiln. The quality and condition of this jar is considered very good even with the minor ruffness and small flakes around the rim due to wear and usage..The bottom has some sand abrasions that were created in the kiln and very commom to this period.(Please note that all of the above can be seen in the enlargement photos,4 & 5)The jar, including the cover is 8"high.Circa:Wanli Period(1573-1620).
A very good early piece that I am sure you will enjoy.
