 "SOLD" Thank you,Canada.
This finely carved figure, known universally as the Laughing Buddha, Budai(meaning "cloth bag")is represented as a Buddhist monk, and is characteristically portrayed as bald, laughing and obese,is seen leaning on a large sack of treasure and holding a strand of beads or rosary in his right hand. Budai has a portly laughing face and pendulous ears;his shoulders are bare and an open robe reveals his bare chest and large belly.Condition:Excellent, with minor age lines common to old soapstone. (please note the photo enlargements)Circa:Qing Dynasty,mid-19thC. Size:3 1/4"H x 2 1/2"W(base) A wonderful Chinese soapstone carving that probably had a place on the scholars table.
