Korean Wire Inlaid Round Lacquer Box, Dragon Decoration
A simple Korean black lacquered cylindrical box with elegant wire inlay decoration of a four toed dragon and flaming pearl amongst clouds on the cover with rounded edges and slightly convex top. The dragon with brass inlaid eyes. Wire inlay of this manner can be found on Korean iron and lacquer objects. The shape, size and proportions of this box are extant in metal and lacquer Korean decorative arts. Not having found reference to specific purposes of such boxes, the yellow silk lined interior of the present box leads us to believe it may have held a small hat such as the Korean chokturi - a small ceremonial head piece worn by ladies of the Yangban ruling class and the royal household. Late Jeoson dynasty. Good condition with minor surface wear as usually encountered with lacquer and an inconspicuous crack on side of the cover - likely helped along by natural wood shrinkage. Some staining of the silk liner. A little remaining sticker residue should clean easily enough by a professional (we have removed what we are comfortable removing.) Diameter, 5 3/4 inches (14.6 cm). Height, 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm).
