An Edo period kozuka of shakudo and copper with relief decoration of five horses on nanako ground. One horse with full silver overlay, one with full gold overlay, one with gold spots, one with silver spots, the fifth with gold mane and tail. Surfaces of horses not gilt or silvered showing a deep red-brown patina contrasting quietly with the shakudo nanako. Condition is good and serviceable with no dents or pinches to the plate and back but with slight movement of the butt surface including minute perforations. (This would be a good match with another of our listings - a pair of menuki, item #1319518.) Length of kozuka, 3 3/4 inches (9.525 cm)
