| Meiji Era (1869-1912) sleeve tip to sleeve tip: 47" shoulder to bottom hem: 49 1/2", sleeve tip to sleeve tip: 119.5 cm, shoulder to bottom hem: 124.5 cm, This pieced juban, or under kimono, is a remarkable find for its superb condition and beautiful construction of color and form. This type of juban would have been worn under a kimono in the winter for warmth, and no doubt it is original to the north of Japan in the region called Tohoku, which in Meiji was a poor farming region. This is a garment born of poverty: the fabrics are city fabrics, probably from Japan's southern region, that found their way to the north via the intra-Japan trade ship called kitamae-sen. Original basting with hand-plied hemp thread is visible throughout this garment. The fabrics--with the exception of the sleeves--are all colored with botanical dyes and date to the end of the Edo Period. The green fabric on the 'bodice' is a raw silk, the lining is homespun cotton dyed with benibana, or safflower. The entire piece is padded with cotton batting and with the exception of a new tear to the collar (shown) the piece is in pristine condition. | ||||||||
