Superb 'Boro' Textile

Meiji Era (1868-1912), 55"/ 140 cm high x 60" x 153 cm wide. This 'boro' textile is a superb example of the patched, mended and reinforced futon covers of old Japan. In this piece we see a veritable blizzard of 'shima'--or hand loomed striped fabric--most of which are laid out in vertical format, creating a stunning visual insistency. Occasionally there is a bit of 'kasuri' ikat indigo amidst the strong flurry of striping. The lower left corner literally hangs by a thread and adds just the right amount of soulfulness to the futon cover. The verso is subtle with wide, faded stripes, pierced by stitching allover, and is equally beautiful to this side pictured.
