'Boro' Farmer's Kimono

Late Meiji/ Early Taisho, c. 1915, 42 12"/ 108 cm shoulder to hem x 47 1/2"/ 121 cm sleeve tip to sleeve tip. This is a wonderful example of a 'boro' or ragged, patched and mended farmer's kimono. It is at least four layers thick (see detail photos) and weighs as much as a rug. This kimono, being made from cast-off and recycled fabric is impossible to date, however it is clear that most of the fabric dates from the Meiji Era, however some of the large-repeat 'kasuri' or ikat fabrics date from the 1920's. This kimono is a journey of stitching, patching and mending, and as you examine the piece inside and out, there are magnificently interesting moments of visual inspiration and beauty, all unplanned by the kimono's anonymous maker.
