A Fine Koshi (Plaid) Sashiko Rug or Throw

49 1/2" x 46 1/2", 125cm x 118 cm, Showa Period, c. 1940, Probably placed under the kotatsu, or a low table heated by a brazier, this homespun sashiko square is layers thick and is constructed and reinforced by rows of white sashiko stitching. It is in very good condition with no wear or staining, save one small split to the top, pictured on the super sized product shot. It is made of koshi, or plaid, cotton in rich, saturated colors of garnet, mustard and black, the edges of the piece finished with a very nice detail of a cross stitch. This piece can be easily used as an area rug and can be machine washed on gentle cycle.
