Tsutsugaki Futon Cover Fragment: Plum, Bamboo, Pine

Meiji or Taisho Era, c. 1915, 51"x 52"/ 132 cm x 129.5 cm This wonderfully drawn indigo cotton futon cover shows the very traditional and highly auspicious grouping of plum, bamboo and pine, or 'shochikubai.' This combination of motives is a favorite one used at weddings, and this piece no doubt was from a bridal trousseau. The shochikubai image is powerful in meaning: bamboo is resilience--it bends but does not break. Plum blossoms are the first blooms to emerge in late winter, early spring, bursting through ice in the spring thaw: they symbolize courage. Pine is longevity and as its needles fall in pairs, it also is a symbol for conjugal fidelity. The indigo of this piece is inky and dark, the cotton is homespun and hand loomed, the white areas are bright and unstained and there are no repairs to this textile.
