Tsutsugaki Futon Cover With a Boro Back

Meiji Era, c. 1895, 63" x 53"/ 160 cm x 135 cm, This beautifully faded homespun indigo dyed cotton futon cover was recombined by its successive owners in an attempt to create utilitarian longevity from what must have once been a pictorial futon cover with a coherently drawn image. Now, the piece comes to us in wonderfully graphic form with its vigorous and wildly vibrant trailing vine images broken and reassembled against equally fractured family crest or 'mon' showing a stylized cherry blossom. The beauty in this piece is in its random reassembling of an existing cloth. When the piece is turned around to its verso, the bold tsutsugaki drawing pales to reveal its mended--or boro--back, wonderfully detailed with patches placed wherever reinforcement was necessary.
