A Silk Yose Juban: Patches

ca. 1900 47" x 41 1/2", 199.5 cm x 114.5 cm This pieced--or yose--juban is an under-kimono. It is made of five different silks, with the exception of the ikat silks (very likely these are early Meisen silks) the exterior of the piece is chirimen, or crepe silk. The piece work of the kimono is wonderful in that the back is of an asymmetrical design. The contrast of the blue silks with the silver and plum Meisin silks of the sleeves and bottom is beautiful. Down the proper right, back, of the piece there is a wonderfully colored, middle blue shibori silk, its design seems to be of a Daruma doll (a good luck talisman in the form of Daruma, the father of Zen Buddhism in China and Japan) as well as graphic elements from a kind of incense game that originated in the Heian Period. The interior is lined in a dramatic, inky-deep purple silk.
