| ca. 1900-25 63 3/4" x 63", 162 cm x 160 cm This handsome, tsutsugaki (freehand paste resist dyed) five-panel noren is of a pale grey asa (hemp or ramie) fabric overdyed with indigo. The asa fabric is of a very toothy, heavy hand, very evidently hand loomed. The noren, or doorway hanging, shows six small pine saplings, all hand drawn using rice paste extruded through a cone-shaped tube. Dominating the design is a centrally placed family crest, in this case it is a crest showing stylized oak leaves or kashiwa. Most likely this noren was made as a wedding gift or for a bridal trousseau, as this genre indigo dyed tsutsugaki textiles were often celebratory in nature. The pine is a symbol of long life; it is also a symbol of conjugal fidelity as pine needles fall in pairs, thus symbolizing a couple's union. The top banding of the noren is made of indigo-dyed cotton loops, each hand-stitched. The noren is unused and is in mint condition. With the exception of some very faint, small, constellations of lighter colored areas on the back of the noren--virtuarlly unnoticealbe from the front of the piece, and not uncommon for textiles of this age--this piece is in perfect condition (see detail photo). A gorgeous example of asa tsutsugaki with a refined and simple design. | ||||||||
