A Boldly Patched Boro Cotton Work Kimono

ca. 1925-30 45 1/2" x 45 1/2", 115.5 cm x 115.5 cm This cotton work coat is hand sewn from large fragments of cloth. The interior, visually more interesting than the exterior, is made of hand loomed, safflower-dyed cloth on the shoulders and arms. The rest of the interior is fashioned of large pieces of fabric (mostly machine loomed) sewn in great, bold applications allover. The result is very graphic. The exterior of the garment is of an indigo dyed katazome (stencil dyed resist) cotton fabric to mimic kasuri, or ikat woven cloth. A beautiful and simple piece of old Japan.
