| ca. early to mid Twentieth century 35" x 54", 89 cm x 137 cm Constructed of four panels of intensely inky-dark indigo dyed cotton, this noren, or door covering, shows an graphically placed kanji (Chinese character) enclosed in a thick white circle. The white of the resist-dyed kanji is yellowed from age, however the cotton is in fine condition and the indigo dyed cloth is spectacularly dense in color. Note the nine, lighter blue tabs on top, each attached using a wonderful 'X' stitch in thick, white cotton thread. The tabs are made of dyed asa, or hemp. | ||||||||||
