| ca. early to mid Twentieth century 72" x 58", 183 cm x 147.5 cm Stunningly subtle, this intact futon cover is woven from the leftover thread from many different spools which have been knotted together to form one long filament of multi-colored thread, hence the irregular and intermittent progression of color and stripe up and down the panels that comprise this futon cover. Zanshi is the term for this homespun cloth made of leftover thread, and it speaks so much of the frugal nature of the Japanese home and the hand woven fabrics each family produced for their own use. Almost Shaker in its self-effacing beauty, the subtle coloration was acheived by weaving indigo cotton and various shades of cotton and silk weft threads against an indigo dyed cotton warp. The silk passages glimmer softly. The reverse of this futon cover is a bold koshi, or plaid, fabric, also very home made, in reds, black, white and yellow. This intact futonji has been emptied of its cotton batting, so it is flat and heavy from its hand weaving: it is in wonderful condition, feels great in the hand, and would make a fine home accessory, such as a throw for the bed or couch. This piece is so much better in person than on a small screen, and it is a wonderful piece of old Japan. Don't overlook this one. | |||||||||||||||
