A Beautiful Boro Futonji: Heavily Patched Panel

ca. late Nineteenth/early Twentieth century 63" x 36 1/2", 160 cm x 93 cm A beautiful boro futonji: the koshi, or plaid, cotton of this futon cover is wonderfully toothy and thick in the hand, clearly of hand spun, hand woven cotton, very much a reminder of old Japan and weaving that was practiced in the home. The cloth is of a gorgeous coloration, rich in indigos. The real selling point of this boro cloth is the traffic jam of patching and mending to the proper right panel: it is a luxury of patching and over-patching, and this crowded panel of patches versus the relatively patch-free adjoining two panels adds graphic interest through the great contrast of the two areas. Very much recommended for the high quality of the base cloth and the interesting overall look of the piece.
