A Beautiful Three Panel Katazome Futonji: Cranes

ca. late Nineteenth/early Twentieth century 76" x 38", 193 cm x 96.5 cm A wonderful piece of cloth: three panels of beautiful indigo dyed katazome cloth showing a repeat pattern of interlocked cranes, the overall effect being a kind of intricate visual geometry not unlike the etchings of M.C. Escher. This futon cover fragment most undoubtedly would have been offered to a bridal couple as part of their trousseau, as was the custom during Meiji Era: cranes, as they symbolize long life, also symbolize conjugal fidelity, since cranes mate for life. The cotton is homespun and dyed in botanical indigo. Note the alignement of the pattern on the three panels, and also the back of the piece where the indigo dyed pattern is less regular than the front: the beautiful 'blooming' of the dye as it was semi-resisted, the patching to the back to help reinforce the piece contribute to the visual interest of this fine cloth. A faint, saucer-sized stain on the proper right bottom corner, front.
