| ca. late Nineteenth, early Twentieth century 67 1/2" x 64", 171.5 cm x 162.5 cm An impressively large and beautifully mended textile, this indigo dyed cotton boro furoshiki has massive graphic appeal. The cotton has a beautiful hand and the placing of the patches of the piece--all sewn to reinforce and to mend--are very well done. The pattern on the piece--clusters of hirgana characters--are applied using a traditional stencil resist dye method called katazome. The groupings of writing, arranged in free symmetry all over the piece, add wonderful visual interest. The piece is obviously worn and torn, which is the appeal of boro textiles. | ||||||||||||||
