A Meiji/Taisho Shibori Yukata: Diagonal Tatewaku

late Nineteenth, early Twentieth century 55" x 47", 140 cm x 119.5 cm An impressive shibori woman's yukata, this piece is made of hand spun, hand woven cotton, nicely thick and toothy in the hand. It shows the tatewaku, or rising steam, pattern, however in this case the pattern is tilted on the diagonal which is an unusual variation to the its standard verticality. Dyed in indigo using the shibori or shape resist method, the watery blue field of pattern is done in the miura technique, while the undulating lines are a kind of tiny 'spiderweb' technique. The piece was worn; there is a curious, slightly darkened, central column down the center of the back of the piece. A few areas of very subtle wear can be seen, but overall this is a very cohesive, bright and fine example of shibori dyeing; it is certain that this is an Arimatsu piece, dyed in one of Japan's most vibrant centers of shibori dyeing, still very active to this day. An almost identical piece can be seen published in Kyoto Shoin's book, 'Japanese Tie-dyeing' featured on page 22.
