A Taiten Shibori Yukata: Indigo Dye

ca. mid Twentieth century 54" x 54', 137 cm x 137 cm This is an indigo dyed cotton man's yukata, or unlined, informal 'lounging' kimono. It is dyed using the taiten shibori technique. The bolt of cotton cloth is squeezed and compressed compactly down its warp threads, pulled into a tight bundle. It is then placed in an indigo vat to be dyed. The result is an overall pattern of small blips of dark indigo, as can be seen in the detail photos here. This technique produces an allover dappling of dye, very elegant. There is some slight discoloration to the piece along the vertical fold between the sleeve and the body of the piece, front and back and on right and left. A gorgeous thing, nonetheless, and quite wearable.
