| ca. early to mid Twentieth century 52" x 56", 132 cm x 142 cm The kikyo or bellflower family crest is the central image in this four-panel indigo-dyed cotton noren. The bellflower is a five-petal, indigo colored flower that blooms in August and is known in Japan as one of the 'seven plants of autumn.' This is a strking and simply designed noren, whose indigo blue is clear and very much a cobalt blue. The dominant crest, along with the family name, written in kanji on the proper right panel, create a very bold, graphic design--very attractive. Quite large, this noren shows little wear, fading or stains. | |||||||||
