| ca. early to mid Twentieth century 20 3/4" x 17" x 3/4", 53 cm x 43.5 cm x 2 cm Antique and vintage sakabukuro, or sake straining bags--the material from which this sitting cushion is made made--are in themselves highly collectible in Japan and abroad. This wonderful zabuton is made from a beautifully earthy, dark sakabukuro, whose fabric is cotton dyed in green persimmon tannin or kaki shibu. The end result is a very rich, leathery cloth. The zabuton is stuffed with cotton batting and the entire piece is hand sewn. Overall the condition is good, but do note some wear, some very small stains and a few pin-prick sized holes, which is reasonable for an old piece that has been used. The years of use have added to the piece's interest. Do note that the piece is not "cushiony" in the traditional sense: the cotton batting is a thin layer and the piece is more of a pad than a cushion. | |||||||||
