| ca. early to mid Twentieth century 20 3/4" x 13", 52.5 cm x 33 cm This vest was worn by a pilgrim who visited a circuit of sacred temples; each of the twenty stamps of this vest (some quite faint) was received upon visitation to a temple; the hand written kanji (Chinese characters) on this vest most likely is a sutra and was written by a temple priest. Most likely this vest comes from the pilgrimage circuit on Shikoku Island where 88 sacred sites are visited by the devout. The cotton of this piece is beautifully gauzy and hand loomd. The vest is entirely hand sewn; note some staining to the proper front of the garment. | |||||||||||
