A Pristine Child's Meisen Kimono: Talismanic Stitches

ca. early Twentieth century 36" x 30", 92 cm x 76 cm This is a wonderfully colored child's kimono, woven in a kind of commercially dyed and produced silk called meisen. Outstanding is the bright orange stitching running up the back of the kimono, to which are tied two small paper knots. This stitch is called semmamori and it is meant to protect the wearer from harm: in this case, on this garment, this semmamori is particularly wonderful. Lined in olive green, this kimono shows no wear whatever, and its fabulous 'kasuri' or ikat repeat design of ovoid shapes (possibly coins?), is done in a beautiful palette of colors.
