| ca. late Nineteenth/ early Twentieth century 70" x 25 1/2", 178 cm x 64.5 cm Zanshi-ori, or cloth woven from remaindered threads, is one of the favorite folk textiles here at Sri. This particular piece is remarkable in its heavily woven texture, and the profusion of knots seen throughout the weaving of the piece. Notice the striated coloration of blue, and how contrasting colors in the weft appear and suddenly disappear: this is all very much the character of this home spun cloth, a fabric born on penury and thift. The patching is a wonderful addition to this piece, but we are most interested in the heavy fibers and the very slubby, knotty character of the cloth itself. This is a wonderful example of zanshi and we are proud to present it. | |||||||||||||
