| ca. early Twentieth century 21 1/2" x 24", 54 cm x 62 cm Beautiful. This han juban, or half under kimono, is made from a deeply dyed indigo shibori from the Eastern part of Japan, notably the Akita region, which is known for this sparse, white-on-deep blue shibori. The pattern of this shibori is sprays of flowers and falling pine needles. The patching and mending to this garment is just beautiful: note the contrasting pattens and colors and the large panel of woven cloth reinforcing the neck area: this fragment shows the traditional 'arrow feather' motif, very commonly seen in Japanese textiles. There is some staining/disocoloration on the white cotton at the nape area, but the boro aspect of this cloth and the beauty of the dyed indigo overshadows this detail. | |||||||||||||||
