| ca. late Nineteenth, early Twentieth century 7 1/2" x 9 1/2", 2 1/8", 18.5 cm x 24 cm x 5.5 cm A marvelous sample book showing 68 different samples of intricately stencil-dyed patterns called komon. Komon refers to an all-over pattern and it also suggests the very small, all-over patterns popular in the late Edo and Meiji eras. This is a great compendium of these varied designs, which are house over 17 pages within a nicely tooled and stamped leather binding. Note the vertical, marbled paper next to each sample which is framed within a small, cardboard aperture; the samples shown are of chirimen, or crepe, silk, and the color pallete leans toward subtle and somber greys and grey-blues. | |||||||||||||
