Shibori Crabs: Amagi, Kyushu

ca. late Nineteenth, early Twentieth century 52" x 47 1/2", 132 cm x 121 cm This very deeply blue indigo dyed futon cover--most likely recombined from a kimono or yukata--shows two very animated crabs amid young bamboo, under a rain of white dots, all dyed in the shibori technique. The cotton of this piece is very nicely home spun and hand loomed and feels wonderful in the hand. The indigo is dark yet clear; the rendering of the crabs is fantastically good: pay special attention to the depcition of the crabs' legs and notice how the front legs are shown curving behind and under the back legs--ingeniously done. This shibori picture is neatly and discretely patched: the mendings are hardly noticeable from the front (see detail photos) yet there are over a dozen patches on the back of the piece, clearly illustrated in one photo. Unbelievably charming and collectible. This piece is said to have been made in Amagi, on Kyushu Island.
