A Sashiko Stitched and Patched Cotton Furoshiki

ca. early to mid Twentieth century 41" x 41", 104 cm x 104 cm A stunning thing. This is a very re-worked cotton furoshiki or wrapping cloth--its beauty owes to many factors, but lies mainly in the contrast of the very strong, opposing rows of white stitching which are offset by the random placement of patches, some of which are below the stitching, some of which are placed on top of the stitches. This play of patches and stitching is complex and beautiful to see. The green dyed, hand loomed cotton base is slightly faded in areas, and this works to the advantage of the beauty of the piece; the stitching--both in white and black thread--also bring richness to the overall attractiveness of this wrapping cloth. Very highly recommended, this is a smashingly good textile which shows patching and mending. Both sides--the unpatched face and the very patched interior--have 'artistic' merit. A good addition to a collection of boro and a fine way to start a collection.
